Emergency Loans

Options for urgent expenses, including alternatives to borrowing

An emergency loan is not a separate guaranteed product. It is a phrase people use when seeking credit for an urgent cost such as a necessary car repair, medical bill or essential household expense.

Cash On Your Mobile accepts online enquiries from $400 to $5,000 and may help identify a lender from its panel. We are a licensed finance broker, not the lender. The lender makes the final assessment and provides any rates, fees, repayments and credit contract.

Important: urgency does not remove the assessment process. Approval, the amount offered and transfer timing are never guaranteed. Before borrowing, check whether immediate support or a lower cost arrangement could solve the problem without adding repayments.

Start With the Urgent Expense

Before applying for credit, identify exactly what must be paid, when it is due and whether the provider can help. Utilities, telecommunications providers, insurers, landlords, councils and medical practices may offer extensions, payment arrangements or hardship support.

A direct arrangement can be faster and cheaper than borrowing. Ask what documents are required, whether fees can be paused and whether the amount can be spread over affordable instalments.

Emergency Support Without a Cash Loan

Emergency relief

Community organisations may help with meals, food vouchers, transport, clothing, furniture or part payment of utility bills.

No Interest Loan

Eligible essential goods and services may be paid directly to a supplier without interest or fees.

Centrelink advance

Eligible recipients may be able to receive part of a future payment early and repay it through later payments.

Financial counselling

A free counsellor can help prioritise bills, explain options and sometimes negotiate with creditors.

What Can a No Interest Loan Cover?

MoneySmart says eligible applicants may be able to borrow up to $2,000 for essential goods and services such as appliances, furniture, car repairs, registration, medical and dental costs, education or employment expenses. Up to $3,000 may be available for some rental, council rate or natural disaster needs.

A No Interest Loan is not paid to you as cash. The approved supplier or invoice is generally paid directly. Eligibility and affordability still need to be assessed, but there are no interest charges or fees. Learn more from the MoneySmart No Interest Loans guide.

When Credit May Not Solve the Emergency

Borrowing may be unsuitable if repayments would prevent you from paying rent, food, utilities, transport or other essentials. It may also make the situation worse where the shortfall happens every pay cycle, several debts are already overdue or a new loan is being considered only to repay another loan.

In those circumstances, a financial counsellor can help you review the whole position. Financial counselling is free and confidential. You do not need to pay a debt management company to access it.

If You Decide to Enquire

  1. Choose the amount carefully. Request only what is needed for the specific expense.
  2. Provide accurate information. Include income, living expenses, debts and the purpose of the loan.
  3. Broker review. We may identify a panel lender whose criteria appear relevant.
  4. Lender verification. The lender may check identity, income, expenses, bank transactions and credit history.
  5. Review any offer. Compare the total amount repayable and the impact of each repayment before accepting.

What a Lender May Assess

  • Your identity, age and Australian residency
  • Your employment or other regular income
  • Normal household expenses and the urgent cost
  • Existing loans, credit cards and other commitments
  • Recent bank transactions and account conduct
  • Your credit history and recent applications
  • Whether the requested credit meets the stated need
  • Whether repayments appear affordable without substantial hardship

Responsible lending obligations require reasonable inquiries about your financial situation, requirements and objectives, plus reasonable steps to verify relevant information. An urgent request can still be declined if the lender cannot establish that the proposed credit is not unsuitable.

Timing and Emergency Loan Applications

An online enquiry may be completed at any time, but lender assessment depends on processing hours, the information provided and any further documents required. If an offer is approved and accepted, bank transfer timing can also vary.

Words such as “emergency”, “instant”, “fast” or “same day” must not be treated as a guarantee. Do not commit to an expense on the assumption that money will arrive by a particular time.

Costs and Repayments

The cost depends on the product, amount, term and lender. Before accepting, check every fee, the repayment frequency, the total number of repayments and the total amount repayable. A loan that looks manageable per week or fortnight can still be expensive over the full term.

  • Compare the amount received with the total repaid
  • Check the dates against regular income and essential bills
  • Understand default fees and what happens if a payment is missed
  • Ask whether early repayment changes the amount owing
  • Keep a copy of the credit contract and repayment schedule

Bad Credit and Urgent Applications

Previous credit problems do not automatically decide the result, but no responsible lender can promise approval. A lender may consider current income, expenses, debts, recent bank transactions and credit history.

Making several urgent applications in a short period may result in multiple credit enquiries and can affect a credit profile. Submit accurate information through one process rather than applying repeatedly to test different lenders.
